Drumming

Drumming
I have been learning to get better at my drumming when things are hard.
I am proud of my drumming  because it is my favourite thing to do it gets me moving and grooving.
Something that challenges me at drumming is when I get a new tricky sheet I have to practice and practice to get it right because Practice makes perfect. The learning muscle I am growing is my perseverance muscle.

Drumming is my most favourite thing to do. On a Tuesday I go to Taradale to have my lesson and my teachers name is Cameron Budge. I have learnt to hold the drum sticks in the right place - when I first started he put marks on the sticks so I knew where to put my hands.

I am learning a new piece at the moment and the beat was created by the popular singer Michael Jackson.

The hardest part is at the beginning when I have to drum with the drum sticks on the floor tom and snare at the same time.

I can tell you what a floor tom is, it is a drum that stands on 3 legs and the top is a clear skin.  This is what a floor tom looks like:
The snare is smaller and shorter than the Floor Tom
This is what a snare looks like:

It takes me 5 or 6 times at home practising to get the music sheet right and when I get it right I can get a new piece of music to practice. I hope to one day play in a rock band.

Matariki

Matariki
Matariki is the Maori name for a cluster of Stars which rises in Mid Winter. It is the start of a New Year for The Maori.

This is the cluster of the stars.

We celebrated Matariki at school on Wednesday this week - the 6th June. There were different activities like hand sewing, carving, cooking, flax weaving and mural painting. I chose to do the mural painting with Mrs Hill. It was so much fun.

There were 6 of us in the painting group with Mrs Hill. We had to design our mural and then paint it onto big sheets of wood.

 This is our group:
Ashley who designed our mural
Charlotte, Izzy, Beau, Chris
and me.

In this picture we all had our different pieces to paint.

I painted the whole river and helped Beau with Te Mata Peak.

I loved painting it and can't wait for it to go up outside the staff room at school.

Something that challenged me was painting the river challenge because I did not want to get blue paint in the koru.
I am proud of my learning because it took along time to paint it and we had to persevere and work together like a team.

Art by Rosie

MY ART

I have been learning art this year. I go to lessons every week and my teacher is Katie. I really love going and painting pictures that we can hang on our walls at home.

I wanted to paint a picture that would challenge me, so I chose to do a painting in a Van Gogh style. It was really hard as his style of painting uses lots of little strokes and has lots of different colours painted on top of each other.

This is my finished art work. I am so proud of how it looks. It took me 8 lessons to finish. I did it all by myself. Katie just showed me how to mix the colours and how to do different brush strokes.

This is the steps that I did my painting in. I hope you enjoy looking at my pictures.

First I had to choose a canvas that I wanted to paint on. Then I had to outline in pencil the type of picture that I wanted to paint.

I started to paint my first layer of blues and greens.

Then I added the colours of the houses and added more layers of blues and greens.

Next I added yellow for my stars and moon. I also put more layers onto my houses.

The next step was to start painting the clouds. This part was hard as it was hard to get the right colour.

This picture is me doing last few details on my painting.
